The Flemington DIY Fall Jazz Series opens on Saturday evening, September 20th, with the Joe Rizzolo Quartet. Band personnel includes Joe Rizzolo on drums, Tim Hegarty, tenor saxophone, Nat Janoff on guitar, and John Lenis, bass.

Joe Rizzolo is a musician and leader of The Joe Rizzolution Trio and The Paul Abler Legacy Group. Joe began his musical journey listening to his father’s records, particularly The Beatles. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Percussion Performance and a Music Education Certification. Joe’s interest in jazz emerged when he began performing on the saxophone, bass and drums in middle school under the direction of Paul Larson. Among his numerous musical influences, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny stand out. Joe has led various jazz ensembles since 2008, mostly performing in the Northern New Jersey area.  He has also toured with the progressive rock band The Tea Club, contributing his skills as a drummer and composer on their album Quickly Quickly Quickly

Tim Hegarty is a New York-based jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger known for his soulful tenor sound and deep roots in the hard bop tradition. A former student of Jimmy Heath and Frank Foster, Hegarty has performed with the Gil Evans Orchestra, Mingus Big Band, and Mike Stern, and arranged for artists like Ben E. King. His acclaimed 2014 album, Tribute, features Kenny Barron and Rufus Reid and honors the legacy of jazz greats who shaped his voice. Hegarty brings passion, precision, and a deep reverence for the jazz tradition, both as a performer and educator,

Guitarist, composer, and teacher Nat Janoff is a graduate of William Paterson University, with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance. His debut recording, Looking Through, featuring the world renowned rhythm section of electric bassist Matthew Garrison and drummer Gene Lake, put Nat on the map as both a musician and composer. Two more albums soon followed—a live acoustic recording with fellow William Paterson graduate, Jake Schwartz, simply titled Live, and a collaborative project with Rave Tesar (of Annie Haslam’s Renaissance on keys and left-hand bass) and Ray LeVier entitled, Berkana. His latest CD, Come Together Move Apart, features pianist John Escreet, bassist Francois Moutin ,and drummer Chris Carroll.
Bassist John Lenis has been active in the New York jazz scene for the past 25 years. He performed for several years with projects lead by Nobuki Takamen, Noshir Mody, Hyeseon Hong, Julia Barry, and Nina Lomeo, and recorded one or more albums with each of these accomplished artists. In addition to appearances at many of the New York area’s clubs and festivals, John has toured in the United States, Canada, the UK, and Japan.  Most recently he can be heard on Sean Harkness’ Just What I Needed, recorded after several acclaimed quartet performances at Birdland.
